Crooked Creek

Course History

History

Crooked Creek was built in 1991. The local people of Clay Center put in many hours of work to help build this course. They were so enthusiastic that the main course designer made many trips back to the course to give more instructions. Moving dirt with tracators, loaders, and anything else that would get the job done. They even installed the entire irrigation system, which is quite an accomplishmnet in itself. They started during the spring and they planted the seed in the fall. It was truly a community project.

They also carried in the original clubhouse by hand. About 35 people literally picked up the building and carried it to its current site. The building has undergone many changes since it was moved in 1991, including new restrooms, a great deck, and an addition to the north.

The cousre offers challenges for all skill levels. It utilizes several tee boxes for each hole. As the name suggests the creek winds its way through the entire course. Water comes into play on 7 of the 9 holes. The greens average 6,000 square feet. They putt true and the speed is also pretty fast. A wayward iron could leave you with a 65 footer or maybe longer. Hole # 2 offers a dilema from the tee box. Lay up on the tee side of the creek, or try to carry the ball 250+ yards over the creek. Hole # 3 is the "signature hole" it plays 170 yards from the white tees and a huge 225 yards from the blue tees. It has out of bounds on the left, and a winding creek in front of and along the side of the green. It truly is a tough hole. Hole #6 is only 130 yards but the green is surrounded by water. It's much tougher than it sounds. The finishing hole can be very challenging as well. From the back tees the drive can be quite intimidating with a pond on the left and thick rough dotted with trees on the right. Your second shot will be up hill to a green filled with slopes. BEWARE the creek will get you, eventually. Located just 20 minutes south of I-80 exit 332, it's definitely worth the short drive.
